Corazon Aquino

On Friday, July 30, 2009 the Philippines lost a great woman. This lady brought democracy and overthrew Ferdinand Marcos, one of the most brutal dictators of the 20th Century. Her name was Maria Corazon "Cory" Sumulong Cojuangco Aquino.

Walter Cronkite

On Friday, July 17, 2009 the nation lost one of America’s greatest broadcast journalists of all time, Walter Cronkite. He was one of the last members of a group of journalists led in the 1950s by Edward R. Murrow, the patron saint of broadcast journalism. These names include “60 Minutes” creator Don Hewitt and Douglas Edwards, CBS New’s first anchorman. In 1961, Cronkite replaced Edwards as the anchor of the CBS Evening News.

The 20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

November 9th, 2009 marked the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This day was marked by celebrations all around Germany. Berlin celebrated with its "Festival of Freedom" during which 1,000 eight-foot-tall tiles were stacked along the route where the wall stood and then toppled.  The falling of the wall marked not only the reunification of East Germany and West Germany, but was viewed by many as the flashpoint that led to an end of Communist rule over Eastern Europe. Byron Pitts Gives Keynote at LaGCC Leadership Event

On Saturday November 7th, 2009, LaGCC held "The 2009 Student Leadership Conference." The conference's theme was "Celebrate Achievement: Journey to Success." The event was designed to help students deal with the stresses of school and life in general by providing workshops with resources that will help students cope with situations that might arise while going to school. One of the workshops provided was titled "Smart Phones, Smart People." Presenter Albert Neal, an LaGCC Media professor, discussed the many mobile research applications for use with smart phones.
